Joanne Stevens: Academy Multisport Coach

Where I come from: I grew up as a swimmer, raced through middle and high school. Only girl of 5 kids- I have very athletic brothers. Played every sport imaginable. Started competing in triathlon at 24, later road racing and then cyclo-cross. I’ve always been involved in sports, I taught swim lessons to kids and adults.

What I have taught: Taught bike safety awareness in and out of the classroom to school age kids. Coached youth soccer. Became a personal trainer-I started having friends and then clients ask me for help with training for various endurance endeavors.

Why I coach: I got such an enjoyment out of seeing and helping them and pulling on all my experience, to help them reach their goals. I realized this is what I wanted to do, coach.

What I like in life: Being with my kids. I get a kick out of riding my bike with my 14 year son, thinking back to when I taught him how to ride a bike and now seeing him bike along side me and hoping he doesn’t drop me on the hills. I love playing in Bend; every season has something fun to do.

Coaching Philosophy: Sports should always be enjoyable. No matter how hard you are training and what goals you are trying to accomplish, never forget to have fun.

Goal for the season with the Multisport Team: I hope that I can introduce kids to the world of Multisports. Help them improve their skills. Help them identify some goals. Help them reach their personal goals. I would love to see some of them compete in a triathlon and show them how fun it is.

What I provide as a individual triathlon coach for adults: Whether doing your first triathlon, want to improve your next endurance event or get in shape; I organize a personalized training program focused at helping my clients attain personal fitness objectives according to abilities, time constraints, and training preferences.

The Academy’s Multisport Team is designed to introduce young people ages 12-16 to the exciting world of triathlon.

Triathlon Update

Haley Beal at the Deschutes Dash

The Bend Endurance Academy is pleased to highlight our triathlon team. Participants practiced twice a week from June through August and represented the Academy at both the Deschutes Dash and the Redmond Area Triathlon.

According to head triathlon coach Joanne Stevens, “The team has improved on the skills so much in such a short time. My main focal point is to improve each athletes weak area and give them confidence in that area while helping them strengthen the ones they already have. The most exciting component is seeing Jennifer riding a ride bike and watching Mitch improving his swimming and having the confidence to be able to race.”

Tri Team member Haley Beal, 19, attends Montana State. She had no prior triathlon experience and competed in the pairs division of the Deschutes Dash. Her favorite workout was road biking with Joanne and learning how to “kill the downhills and cut corners at high speeds.” The most challenging discipline for Haley was the swimming, “it really improved my endurance as well as my aerobic capacity.” Haley’s goal for next summer is to compete as an individual in the Deschutes Dash and beat the time that she and her partner set on their two person team.

Mitch Stevens, 13 from Westside Village school says that he really enjoys hill sprints on his bike and he’s been able to run a faster mile. He also feels his confidence has improved in all three sports thanks to his coach (and mom) Joanne.

Women's Triathlon Clinic

The Bend Endurance Academy will host a Triathlon Clinic for Women!

The Clinic runs from 9am to noon on June 19th and 20th and will be taught by local triathlete and certified triathlon coach, Joanne Stevens.

The clinic is open to women of all abilities who are interested in exploring an exciting sport in a supportive, energetic and fun atmosphere.

According to coach Stevens, “This clinic is designed primarily for beginner triathletes and aspiring racers who would like either a hands-on or instructional class, or both. We will be swimming, biking, and running as well as working on transitions, learning about bike maintenance and open water swim technique. We will be covering triathlon-related items such as training, equipment, what to eat, changing a flat tire, what to wear and how to take off a wet suit. If you are planning on racing the Deschutes Dash, or just want some triathlon experience this will help relieve any anxiety you might have and give you the chance to meet some fun women.”

Saturday will be a instructional class.

Meet at Bend Endurance Academy.

We will cover everything you need to know to participate in a triathlon; from nutrition to equipment to strategy etc. Bring running shoes, active clothing for practicing transitions, and a snack.

Sunday will be hands on.

Meet at the Bend Park and Recreation Office, 799 SW Columbia (new building with Kayak sculpture near the Old Mill District/dog park).

We will be swimming, biking, and running parts of the Deschutes Dash Sprint course as a group. Our goal is to learn strategy and techniques for each stage of the race. Bring a wet suit (recommended), bike, helmet, running shoes, training clothing for all 3 disciplines, water, electrolyte drink, and energy food.

Cost is $90 for both days, $50 for Saturday only, $50 for Sunday only.

Triathlon Team Announced!

The Bend Endurance Academy is excited to announce a new addition to our “silent sports” family: The Triathlon Team!

The Tri Team is designed for youth, ages 13-16 who are either newcomers or have had some previous experience with triathlon. The program will begin June 8th. Joanne Stevens, veteran triathlete and certified member of the International Triathlon Coaching Association will serve as the head coach for the Tri Team.

Program athletes will work to improve technique in each discipline, increase overall fitness and have fun while meeting other active multi-sport kids from the area. According to team coach Stevens, “I really enjoy working with this age group. There is so much fun to be had and kids are so quick to learn.”

The Tri Team will have the option to take part in local race events throughout the summer including the Deschutes Dash, the Mid Summer Triathlon, and the Redmond Area Triathlon.

The program will meet Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June 8th-August 14th. The cost for the program is $250 for individuals without a Juniper Swim and Fitness swim pass, $200 for those individuals with swim pass.

Prerequisites to the program are a level of proficiency in the pool– preferably a previous or current association with Bend Metro Parks and Rec swim team, The Athletic Club of Bend Swim Club or the Bend Swim Club. A demonstration of swimming ability would also fulfill the requirement. Running shoes, water bottle and holder, a road worthy bicycle and helmet are also required. Information Meeting May 26
