The course descriptions below are from Bill Warburton, Venue Director for this event.
Tuesday June 22: Tetherow Road Race
Start and Finish at Summit High School. The rollout is on excellent pavement and takes you into the Tetherow Community where roads are generally excellent. The exception is on the eastern most part of the course where the road has several large patches covering sink-holes. They are better than last year but one patch as a manhole cover and a very large “ring-depression” around it. We will be working to resolve this issue, but be careful for now.
Pre-riding the course is fine but there may be gates blocking the road, be careful, go around them.
Wednesday June 23: Northwest Crossing Criterium
This is a very fun course for juniors and is one block shorter on the eastern end than the NWX Criterium, held later in the week, on Friday. Curb bump-outs seem scary at first, especially while driving the course, but we have run this course for events in the past with good success. The course may be slightly more technical than last year’s (around the Deschutes Warehouse) but is also flatter. There is usually a strong headwind to the finish so that’s generally the best place to make breaks stick.
Pre-riding this course can be dangerous due to low lines of sight and heavy car, pedestrian and other bicycle traffic. Please obey all stop signs while scouting this course!
Thursday June 24: Skyliner’s Road Time Trial
The map above shows the junior course turnarounds. Note, the junior courses do not turn into Tetherow. This is a very nice grade for a time trial and many juniors will spin out on the descent.
Special Note: Skyliner’s Road is a very hot topic of debate in the Bend cycling community because local residents at the end of the road are concerned about high bicycle traffic on the bad pavement surface with virtually no shoulders, so there is a pending rule to only allow bikes single file and other people want bikes banned totally until the road can be redesigned. Please take this into consideration when you pre-ride this course. Stay to the right as much as possible and use common sense at all times.
On the descent, the pavement is very rough and it can be hazardous to ride too close to the white line, as the shoulder is crumbling. During the race, you will be able to run the entire lane, but while previewing, you might not want to bring up your best wheelset with skinny tires.
Fri June 25: Downtown Bend Criterium
Older juniors will be running this downtown course. The course is very fair and very boring, so be prepared to make the race interesting by using all the tactics you can!
The course is not pre-ride-able because we will run it in the opposite direction of vehicular traffic.
Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27: Awbrey Butte Road Race
Some older juniors will run this course. It’s a hilly, challenging circuit that starts at Summit High School, rolling out neutral for 1 mile to the Shevlin Market/Mt. Washington roundabout. The pavement is good to excellent, with a few stretches of worn chip seal. The course drops past Shevlin Park, then down to Tumalo State Park and back up on O.B. Riley with a short climb to a feed zone. After a few miles of gentle climbing you hit the headwall on Archie Briggs Road. At about 15% it hurts — a lot — especially the 5th time… but the climb continues past the headwall for a mile until topping out back on Mt. Washington.
Pre-riding this course is excellent. Several longer loop options may be added to the north via Tyler Rd and Tumalo Reservoir Rd. before coming back up OB Riley. This is generally where local cyclists ride so expect to see others out there at any time.
